"We've been out on road closures in our area. "As of this time, we haven't been instructed to open up a shelter here," Tunkhannock Township Volunteer Fire Chief Kevin Long said from the firehouse in Long Pond at about 7 p.m. The Monroe County Office of Emergency Services and Red Cross discussed the possibility of opening up temporary area shelters for stranded motorists. "This is the classic wintry mix and the wettest snowfall of the season," said Ohio meteorologist Ben Gelber, on vacation in his native East Stroudsburg.Ĥ:30 p.m., state police closed I-80, between Blakeslee and White Haven, backing up westbound traffic for miles in Monroe County. The morning's mixture of rain and sleet switched over to large, wet snowflakes by 2:30 p.m., dumping a more than an inch an hour at times throughout the afternoon and early evening. Sections of interstates 80 and 380, and routes 611, 196, 209, 115, 715 and several other roads - made treacherous by slush freezing into ice - were closed for hours as police and firefighters worked to reroute traffic. The storm dumped 6 to almost 12 inches of wet snow in the county, affecting the afternoon rush-hour with accidents, stuck vehicles, bumper-to-bumper traffic and road closures. Many in Monroe County used a common phrase to describe area highways and roads during Wednesday's snow storm - "parking lot."
